Beaded velvet dress, mid 1920s
This fabulous party dress perfectly captures the carefree spirit of the 1920s. The exuberant print dazzles with its flowers in ripened bloom unmatched. The longer-in-back scalloped skirt is ideal for dancing until dawn.
The body of the dress is fashioned from luxurious silk velvet printed with large bouquets of poppies and roses on a cream ground. The bodice of ivory silk chiffon is embellished with opaque white bugle beads, silver sequins, glittering rhinestones, and colorful silk floss. A final touch is the ingenious zigzag embroidery where the two fabrics meet.
On the front of the bodice (5th picture down), the bouquets in full bloom repeat each other to reinforce their feminine appeal. Here is a willful romanticism that steals our hearts; sadly, it has disappeared from modern life.
Queen rose of the rosebud garden of girls,
Come hither, the dances are done,
Sing out, little head, sunning over with curls,
To the flowers, and be their sun.
The dress closes on one side with small snaps. The contour drop-waistline seam, which dips lower in back, is piped with self-covered cord. The hemline repeats the dip of the waistline seam. The bodice is ruched above the center-front waistline.
The condition is excellent and wearable.
It measures: 36" bust and waist, skirt full over hip, and 43" from the shoulder to the front hem.
