Silk folding pocketbook, 1930s
This charming little bag came from the private collection of Desire Smith, author of the authoritative book Handbag Chic.
The bag, which is black silk moiré faille on the exterior, is lined with peach moiré faille. The interior has three pockets on one flap, a snapped flap pocket on the center panel, and a mirror with comb on the other flap.
The exterior flap is embellished with a colorful Dicky-bird on a branch of flowers. Very fine petit point embroidery was used for the colorful little birdie. The silk cord handle ends with a large tassel on each side.
On a tree by a river a little tom-tit
Sang "Willow, titwillow, titwillow."
He sobbed and he sighed, and a gurgle he gave
Then he plunged himself into the billowy wave.
Now I feel just as sure as I'm sure that my name
Isn't 'Willow, titwillow, titwillow'
That 'twas blighted affection that made him exclaim
"Oh, willow, titwillow, titwillow."
The condition of the pocketbook is excellent. The mirror has marks; the comb is missing a few teeth.
It measures 3 1/4" tall by 4 3/4" wide when closed. It opens to 9 3/4" tall.
