Brocaded silk chiffon shawl, c.1910
This lovely period textile from the early 20th century is a marvelous blend of East and West. The delicate weave features ribbons of floral brocade on a silk chiffon ground and is typical of French design. The wide printed borders have the stylized boteh and floral motifs found in Kashmir shawls.
An inspired design choice is the alternation of the brocade and chiffon stripes, changing the color of the printed design from muted to vivid. The cream-colored ground is printed with shades of magenta, rose, blue, olive, orange, and gold. The ends of the shawl have narrow hand-stitched hems. While the design is rich and complicated, the vivid symphony of color creates a joyous harmony.
The shawl would be the perfect lightweight summer cover for your shoulders. Or drape it over a table to add a touch of exotic Orientalism to your decor.
The condition is very good to excellent. I found two small discrete mends that get lost in the busy design. Although they are barely discernible, they are reflected in the price. As my clients know, I generally do everything that can be done to bring fine vintage clothing to its highest and best condition; or else I adjust the price accordingly.
It measures 21 1/2" wide by 86" long.
