Edward Abbott 1950s dress

#7013          $750  Sold

Edward Abbott/Wilson Folmar cocktail dress, c.1960

This fabulous dress was designed after 1957 when Wilson Folmar was named head designer for the Edward Abbott line. Made from striking lemon/lime silk taffeta, the superbly constructed dress has amazing beaded decoration on the bodice.

The design combines coral beads, green sequins, copper/gold beaded clusters, and iridescent mirror-backed crystals in a glittering arrangement (3rd picture down.) The curvilinear, quasi-Persian motifs have a haunting, dreamlike fascination.

The waistband is contoured in back for graceful shaping above the full skirt. The bodice is lined with peach taffeta. The skirt, lined with silk organza, has a built-in crinoline. The dress closes in back with a metal zipper.

We have described the vintage advantage of acquiring unique designs at a fraction of the cost of couture. Another vintage advantage is fabulous style for the petite woman overlooked by current designer offerings. Too often, petite styles seem an afterthought or poor cousin to mainstream average sizes.

The condition is almost excellent. The dress shows gentle wear.

It measures: 35"-36" bust, 26" waist, full skirt, 15 1/2" from shoulder to waist, and 41" from shoulder to hem.
