Valentino cashmere/wool tweed suit, 1970s
While fashions come and go, a classic tweed suit, like the little black dress, is a staple to which you can always return. Chanel capitalized on this truism when she decided to make her improbable comeback at the age of 70.
Our suit from Valentino, one of fashion's legends, is made from a soft blend of cashmere and wool. The box-style of the jacket is gently shaped under the bust with three top-stitched darts above each pocket.
The patch pockets, collar, and hem are bordered with metal-link braided trim. The jacket closes in front with buttons. The straight skirt closes on the side-back with a concealed zipper. Both pieces are lined with beige silk.
Valentino brings his fashion flair to everything he produces, whether a glamorous goddess gown or a stylish wool suit. In this case, the Valentino touch shows up in the eye catching, metal-link braided trim.
Valentino started out as the protegé of couturier Jean Dessès. In 1960 Valentino set up his own couture house in Rome. He was always dreaming of the movie goddesses he had adored as a young boy. "I always have a goddess in mind when I design," Valentino once said. "I like big entrances, arrogant attitudes, and women with men at their feet!"
The condition is excellent. The suit is clean and ready to wear.
The size is marked 12.
The jacket measures: 40" bust, 36" waist, 38" hem, 15" from shoulder seam
to shoulder seam, 23" sleeve length, and 20" from shoulder to hem.
The skirt measures: 30" waist, 38" hip, and 22 1/2" length.
