#2437 $950
Bonwit Teller velvet evening coat, 1920s
Made from emerald silk velvet and lined with a lighter shade of green satin, the slouchy casual style personifies the "party till dawn" attitude of the Flapper Era. Plush silk velvet has the opulent luxury that Fortuny so admired in Renaissance fabrics. He termed velvet "the aristocrat of stuffs."
The white fur collar beautifully frames the face. The ingeniously shaped sleeves are cut into the back with zigzag seams (2nd picture from bottom). The very full sleeves are pulled in at the wrist with rows of ruching. The clutch style coat has no closures.
Opulent silk velvet gives our luxe coat an enduring significance and charm. Indeed, this is a coat with an "attitude," conveying both old money assurance and the confidence of supreme stylishness.
If you remember the old Bonwits Fifth Avenue store in New York, you know everything was very expensive and made for the carriage trade. I can offer this fabulous coat at a good price because I was able to buy it so well.
The condition is excellent and wearable. The slight variation in color in the pictures is a photographic artifact only.
The size depends on the amount of overlap.
It measures: approximately 48" circumference, 24" sleeve length, and 43" from shoulder to hem.
