Scaasi Boutique evening dress, late 1980s

Whether designing couture or ready-to-wear, Scaasi's aesthetic consistently focused on shape over embellishment. The sculptural party dress is signature Scaasi with the elongated, fitted torso and elaborate pouf skirt.

The dress is fashioned from sparkling silver-colored lace and is lined with white taffeta. The ruffles are hemmed with nylon horsehair to hold the shape. The skirt lining is also hemmed with nylon horsehair and has several rows of stiff tulle ruffles at the bottom. The dress closes on the side with a coil zipper.

Arnold Scaasi trained at Paquin in Paris before a two year stint with Charles James in New York. Although Scaasi was known as a superb colorist, he shows us here that he is also master of monochromatic design.

The effect is based on Scaasi's finely honed sense of shape. Each garment is soft sculpture. In this respect, Scaasi was the model for today's go-to designer for understated, effortless luxury, Tomas Maier.

The condition is excellent. It is clean and ready to wear.

The size is marked 12. It measures: approximately 38" bust, 30" waist, 42" hip, 20 1/2" from shoulder to drop waist, and 49" from shoulder to hem.
