1920s Couture dress

French couture quality, embroidered tulle dress, c.1915-1920

This lovely French garden party dress would make a fab informal wedding dress. Or wear it to your own garden party! Here is the winning charm and demure elegance of the period.

The exceptional attention to detail and fine hand finishing suggest the dress came from a couture fashion house. Notice the elaborate embroidery on the underarm sides of the bodice. The label reads "Maurice Mayer/Avenue des Champs-Elysées/Paris."

The dress was made from layers of fine cotton tulle attached to a cream colored silk under-dress. The color has mellowed to a lovely shade of ivory. This patina is the tribute that time pays to beauty.

The tulle is exquisitely hand embroidered with padded satin stitch, tiny French knots, and open-work fill. The delightful floral pattern confers on the dress the winsome beauty characteristic of the period. I can see a gracious hostess in our dress: nothing could be more perfect than the costume; pure ivory, but the fashion consummate; a single rose her only ornament.

I love the romantic faux sleeves open at the shoulder. The dress closes in back with tiny covered buttons, hooks, and snaps. The pink ribbon in the decorative cummerbund is a replacement, but the pink satin bow is original.

The condition is almost excellent. This wearable dress has a few pin-prick holes that get lost in the fullness of the material.

It measures: 36" bust, 28" waist, full skirt, 15 1/4" from shoulder to waist, and 51" from shoulder to hem. The mannequin in the pictures is 6' tall. If your height is under 6', the dress would be ankle length.
