Wire brim straw hat, c.1914-1918
This charming hat is as sophisticated and stylish today as when first worn. Perhaps the lady wore it to say goodbye to her beau who was going to the front or to welcome him home after the armistice. Antique clothing reminds that historical events were made up of real people with stories to tell
The hat is fashioned from black straw stretched over a wire frame and lined with black silk. The brim is covered with bands of stiffened mesh and faux thistle decorations.
The condition is almost excellent. The mesh that covers the brim is slightly worn. There are no other problems.
The inner crown circumference is 23". The height of the crown is 4 1/2".
