High relief gutta-percha cameo, c.1860
Gutta-percha, a gum elastic from the sap of a Malayan tree, was easy to mold into designs with intricate detail. Since gutta-percha is also durable, the high relief design will not shatter or chip. The pretty lady with elaborately detailed hair shows artful play of black-on-black textured design.
The condition is excellent.
It measures 1 7/8" by 1 1/2".
